The Super Grouper

Avid Multigrouping Made Easy

What is the Super Grouper?

The Super Grouper is a set of macros which run within the Mac version of the application QuicKeys that make the laborious process of multi grouping in Avid Media Composer “set it and forget it” by automating the entire process.

  • Process 24 tracks of video and 24 tracks of audio
  • Automatically move from one track to the next
  • Begin and end at any track
  • Subclip up to 5 sequences
  • Split up a sequence between multiple systems by running different tracks on each
  • Skip over filler
  • Skip blank tracks
  • Use your own add edits or have The Super Grouper create them for you (at both the head and tail of each clip)
  • Resume sub clipping after canceling
  • Compatible with OS X 10.8 - 10.12
  • Compatible with Avid Media Composer 6.0 - 8.6

New in Version 5

  • Now includes The Super Chunk, a macro for quickly subclipping chunks of video and audio clips with aux TC for situations such as stage shows where there are few overlapping clips and running The Super Grouper would take too long or quickly fixing a group where a small portion needs to be redone.
  • Allows for grouping of up to 5 sequences consecutively with different track assignments
  • New walkthrough installer moves files into place and imports shortcuts automatically
  • New Super Grouper application can be activated from the dock, no need for keyboard shortcuts
  • Add edit process is now completely automated, guessing the number of add edits is no longer required
  • Checks for updates and compatibility and prompts to adjust settings for optimal performance
  • Notifications tell you what SG is doing (OS X 10.9 or later required)
  • All prompts have been rewritten in Applescript, allowing for more detailed options and info
  • Resume now gives an overview of where it left off
  • All preferences are now remembered including grouping preference and can be easily changed while running SG
  • Built in support infrastructure allows for faster troubleshooting
  • New options including not adding aux tc when subclipping and not grouping camera audio
  • Full compatibility with Avid Media Composer 6.0 through 8.6 and OS X 10.8 - 10.12

grouping for stage shows with the super chunk

In 2012, while working as an assistant editor on a show for the Discovery channel I became very frustrated with how tedious the multi grouping process is in Avid Media Composer. Having learned from Ian Hurley the power of using QuicKeys, I decided to try my hand at automating the process. I started with a macro that Ian had made which was unique in that it could move from one track to the next. Initially I wanted to create something simple but I quickly realized the power of automation and QuicKeys and the project became what is now The Super Grouper.

As someone who knows the pain of working on a large show with complex sequences and tons of tracks it is my goal to get The Super Grouper into as many hands and assist stations as possible, so please get the word out! And if you have any suggestions or requests please contact me below.

I’ve worked countless hours over the past 3 years to make The Super Grouper what it is today and due to licensing issues with Startly, the creator of QuicKeys I can't legally sell The Super Grouper but if you find that the Super Grouper is a important part of your workflow and makes your job easier please donate or encourage your employer to donate! I very much appreciate it!
